First published in 1857, this authorized biography follows Charlotte Brontë from the Haworth parsonage and the harsh Clergy Daughters' School through teaching posts, the Brussels pensionnat, and the years in which Jane Eyre, Shirley, and Villette were written. Gaskell uses family letters to show the deaths of her mother, brother, and sisters Emily and Anne, the secret of the Bell pseudonym, and the late marriage to Arthur Nicholls. Yorkshire weather, publishers, and visitors to the parsonage fill the middle chapters. The book is a life of one novelist, not a joint study of all four Brontë siblings.
