This comedy, printed in the 1623 Folio and likely first staged around 1599, follows Rosalind after her uncle Duke Frederick banishes her from the court. She goes to the Forest of Arden disguised as the youth Ganymede, with her cousin Celia and the fool Touchstone. There she finds her father, the exiled Duke Senior, and Orlando, who has fled his brother's household and hangs love poems on the trees. Disguised, she schools Orlando in courtship while other pairs - shepherds, clowns, and a melancholy observer, Jaques - play out rival versions of love and country life. The play tests pastoral escape against the politics of the court.
