Written in the second century, this Greek history of Alexander follows the Macedonian king from his accession through the destruction of Thebes, the invasion of Asia, Issus, Gaugamela, the fall of Persepolis, the pursuit of Darius, and the campaigns in Bactria and India to the return and death at Babylon. Arrian draws mainly on Ptolemy and Aristobulus, weighing their reports against later stories. Speeches, river crossings, and sieges such as Tyre structure the narrative. The work is a military life of one conqueror, not a general history of the Hellenistic world.
