Synopsis
First published in 1843-44, this novel concerns old Martin Chuzzlewit, a rich, suspicious man, and his grandson, also Martin, who falls out with him and is taken up by the architect Pecksniff. Young Martin and the assistant Tom Pinch meet hypocrisy in Pecksniff's household; Martin later tries his luck in the United States. A parallel plot follows the cousin Jonas, a grim marriage, and the nurse Mrs Gamp. Inheritance and selfishness organize the book. It is a comic-satirical novel, not a travel guide to America.
