First published in 1968, this fantasy novel follows a unicorn who learns she is the last of her kind and leaves her wood to find the others. She is joined by Schmendrick, an inept magician, and Molly Grue, and the road leads through a carnival of false beasts to the castle of King Haggard, whose Red Bull has driven unicorns into the sea. The narrative treats talking animals, a curse of immortality, and the cost of taking human shape. It is a quest romance about loss and recognition, not a children's animal fable and not a ballad of a hunt.
