Synopsis
First published in 1956, this memoir recounts Eric Newby's 1938 voyage as an apprentice in the four-masted barque Moshulu in the last commercial grain race from Australia to Europe. He describes signing on in Belfast, the run to Port Lincoln, loading wheat, and the return around Cape Horn among a mostly Finnish crew, with work aloft, food, storms, and the hierarchy of the fo'c'sle. The book is a first-person account of one sailing, not a history of the entire windjammer trade.
