Left unfinished at Trollope's death and first issued in 1883, this novel is set in County Galway during the Land League agitation. Philip Jones of Morony Castle, an English landlord, faces boycott, cattle-maiming, and a campaign to break rents, while his household splits over how to treat their Irish neighbours and tenants. His youngest son Florian, a recent Catholic convert, knows more than he will say about an attack on the estate and becomes a target. Dublin lawyers, League organizers, and visiting English relatives thicken the dispute. The book is a political novel of land and intimidation, not a completed country-house romance.
