Synopsis
Published in 1969, this memoir follows Laurie Lee as he leaves his Cotswold village of Slad with a violin, works in London, then crosses to Spain and walks south through Vigo, Valladolid, and Madrid toward the Andalusian coast. He lives by playing in streets and cafes, records heat, poverty, and the courtesy of strangers, and arrives in a country sliding toward civil war. The book closes as fighting begins and he is taken off the coast. It is a first-person travel narrative of a young man on the road, not a history of the war itself.
