This medieval Georgian epic poem, composed in the twelfth century, follows Avtandil, a knight of Arabia, who is sent by his king to find the mysterious knight Tariel, seen wearing a panther skin and vanishing in grief. Avtandil's search leads to Tariel's love for Nestan-Darejan, a princess of Hindustan lost through court intrigue, and to a third companion, Pridon. The three undertake a quest of friendship, exile, and recovery across imagined kingdoms of the East. The poem is a chivalric romance in verse, not a chronicle of a historical war.
