First published in 1924, this fantasy novel opens in the vale of Erl, whose parliament asks the lord to give them a magic king. His son Alveric crosses the border into Elfland, takes the king's daughter Lirazel to wife, and brings her home. She cannot live by Erl's clocks and rites; a son, Orion, is born; and Alveric later hunts the retreating frontier of Elfland with a sword forged against enchantment. The book is a prose romance of two neighboring worlds, not a court-intrigue novel and not only a children's fairy tale.
