The Kellys and the O'Kellys
Or Landlords and Tenants
By Anthony Trollope · 1992
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1848, this Irish novel interweaves two households. Lord Ballindine, an O'Kelly of reduced estate, tries to recover his engagement to the heiress Fanny Wyndham against her guardian's opposition. In the other plot, the farmer Martin Kelly courts Anty Lynch, whose brother Barry schemes to keep her fortune. Court, racing, and country-house scenes sit beside cabin and attorney work. Money, religion, and family pride drive both matches. The book is a comic novel of property and marriage in Ireland, not a history of the Famine.
