First published in 1930, this novel follows the Bundren family as they carry the body of Addie Bundren from their farm toward Jefferson, Mississippi, where she wished to be buried. The journey is told in short chapters from many voices: the husband Anse, the children Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman, and neighbours who watch them pass. A coffin, a flooded river, a barn fire, and the heat of the South press on a family already divided by secret motives. The book is a rural tragedy of duty, grief, and self-interest told as a chorus rather than a single narrative.
