First published in 1894, this collection of stories and verses is set mostly in an Indian jungle. The Mowgli tales follow a boy raised by wolves, taught the Law by Baloo the bear and Bagheera the panther, and opposed by the tiger Shere Khan and by the Bandar-log. Other pieces concern Rikki-tikki-tavi the mongoose in a bungalow garden, the white seal Kotick in the Bering Sea, and the elephant Toomai. Songs close several stories. The book is a set of animal fables and jungle stories, not a single novel and not the later Second Jungle Book alone.
