First published in 1897, this science-fiction novel begins when a bandaged stranger takes rooms at an inn in the Sussex village of Iping and works behind locked doors. He is Griffin, an albino chemist who has found a way to refract his body out of sight and cannot reverse it. Hunger, theft, and rage drive him from the village toward the nearby town, where he tries to force a tramp and then a former fellow student to help him impose an invisible terror. The book is a novel of a scientific experiment turned loose on an English county, not a political allegory.
