Into the Dark Continent

The Travels of Henry Morton Stanley

By Henry Morton Stanley · 2002

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

This volume combines two of Stanley's African travel narratives: How I Found Livingstone (1872) and Through the Dark Continent (1878). The first follows his 1871 march inland from Zanzibar for the New York Herald until he reaches David Livingstone at Ujiji on Lake Tanganyika. The second recounts the 1874-1877 expedition that circled the great lakes and descended the Congo to the Atlantic, through famine, desertion, and fighting. Stanley records porters, kings such as Mutesa, Arab traders, and the river itself. The book is a pair of exploration narratives, not a later history of the Congo Free State.
