First published in 1869, this travel narrative follows a party of American pilgrims on a chartered steamship cruise to the Mediterranean and the Holy Land. Twain records shipboard lectures, tourist bargains, and the gap between guidebook piety and the actual streets of Paris, Genoa, Rome, Athens, Constantinople, and Jerusalem, as well as a side trip toward the Crimea. He mocks relics, hotel keepers, and his fellow passengers as often as he describes ruins. The book is a comic voyage narrative, not a novel and not a later autobiography.
