Synopsis
This illustrated art history pairs short biographical essays with a large suite of color plates. The essays follow seven painters working in and around Paris in the later nineteenth century - Manet, Monet, Renoir, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro, and Cezanne - as they leave the Salon system, paint modern leisure and weather in broken color, and exhibit together in the 1870s. The plates show both familiar and less-seen canvases; notes discuss subject and technique. The book is a group portrait of Impressionism in lives and pictures, not a museum catalogue of one collection.
