The Importance of Being Earnest

By Oscar Wilde · 1960

Back to Catalogue
Synopsis

First staged in 1895, this comedy is set in London and at a Hertfordshire manor. Jack Worthing, who is Ernest in town, and Algernon Moncrieff, who invents an invalid friend Bunbury, both court women who will marry only a man named Ernest. Lady Bracknell interviews Jack as a suitor for Gwendolen; Cecily, Jack's ward, is pursued by Algernon. A handbag left at Victoria Station and the governess Miss Prism resolve the true parentage. Canon Chasuble and cucumber sandwiches supply the country and town jokes. The play is a farce of assumed names and marriage bargains, not a social-problem drama.
