Written in the early fifteenth century, this work of Christian devotion, in four books, urges the reader to withdraw from worldly praise and to model the inner life on Christ. Short chapters treat humility, obedience, the reading of scripture, the instability of human affection, and the need to judge oneself rather than others. Later books turn to the consolation of the interior life and to preparation for the Eucharist. The voice is that of a monastic counselor addressing a brother or a soul. The book is a manual of piety, not a biography of Jesus and not a systematic theology.
