Synopsis
This is a one-volume selection from the diary Samuel Pepys kept in shorthand from 1660 to 1669, while he rose in the Naval Office under the restored Charles II. The extracts follow his work on ships and contracts, the plague year, the Fire of London, the Dutch war, playhouses, music, meals, and his marriage to Elizabeth, including jealousy and infidelity. Contemporary prints and maps sit beside the entries. The book is an abridged personal chronicle of Restoration London, not the complete diary and not a later history of the navy.
