Synopsis
This ancient Greek epic poem is set in the tenth year of the Trojan War and follows the wrath of Achilles after Agamemnon takes the captive Briseis. Achilles withdraws from battle; the Trojans under Hector press the Greeks; Patroclus fights in Achilles' armour and is killed; Achilles returns, slays Hector, and finally yields the body to Priam. Gods take sides and intervene. The scenes are the camp, the walls of Troy, and the plain between. The poem is a martial and funerary narrative of honour and loss, not a complete history of the war from the apple of discord to the wooden horse.
