Synopsis
First published in 1868-69, this novel follows Prince Lev Myshkin, who returns to Russia from a Swiss sanatorium and is taken for an innocent. In Petersburg he is drawn to Nastasya Filippovna, a kept woman about to be sold in marriage, and to Aglaya Yepanchin, a general's daughter. The merchant Rogozhin becomes his rival. Money, scandal, and religious talk surround the prince as households compete to use or protect him. The book is a social and psychological novel, not a treatise on epilepsy or sainthood.
