First published as The Crecy War (1955) and The Agincourt War (1956), this military history follows the Anglo-French war from Edward III's claim in 1337 to the French recovery completed in 1453. Burne, writing as a soldier, reconstructs campaigns and battles - Crecy, Poitiers, Agincourt, and later sieges - from chronicles and from what he terms inherent military probability: what a commander on the ground was likely to do. English captains such as the Black Prince, Henry V, and Talbot stand beside French figures including du Guesclin and Joan of Arc. The book is a study of operations, not a social history of either kingdom.
