Synopsis
In this Aubrey-Maturin novel, Captain Jack Aubrey takes a squadron into the Mediterranean after Napoleon's escape from Elba, while Dr Stephen Maturin works intelligence among old allies and enemies on the North African shore. The pair must disrupt a plan to fund the emperor's return with gold from the Maghreb, and they deal with storms, a new command, and the politics of a brief last war. Private losses on land run beside the naval action. The book is a naval and intelligence novel set in 1815, not a campaign history of Waterloo.
