First published in 1902, this Sherlock Holmes novel sends Dr Watson to Dartmoor to guard Sir Henry Baskerville, heir to a Devon estate haunted by the legend of a gigantic hound that kills the family's men. Holmes, appearing to remain in London, works the case from a distance while Watson reports on the moor, the convict loose upon it, the neighbours at Merripit House, and the warning that Sir Henry should not cross the moor at night. Footprints, a portrait, and a phosphorescent beast supply the evidence. The book is a detective novel of inheritance and a Dartmoor legend, not a ghost story without an investigator.
