The Hornblower Saga 1

This set collects the first three novels of Horatio Hornblower's naval career in chronological order: Mr Midshipman Hornblower, Lieutenant Hornblower, and Hornblower and the Hotspur, first published from 1950 to 1962. The young officer enters the Royal Navy in the 1790s, learns seamanship under harsh captains, and faces prize-taking, examination, and the first tests of command in the wars with revolutionary France. Later volumes follow his service as a junior lieutenant under an unstable captain and then as commander of the sloop Hotspur on the Brest blockade, with marriage and intelligence work ashore. Each book is a complete naval novel. The set opens Forester's Hornblower sequence; it is not a single continuous novel.
