This collection gathers four novels of Horatio Hornblower's years in command during the Napoleonic Wars. In Hornblower and the Atropos he takes a small ship from Nelson's funeral through Mediterranean service; The Happy Return sends the frigate Lydia to the Pacific coast of Spanish America and into the orbit of Lady Barbara Wellesley; A Ship of the Line and Flying Colours follow his captaincy of the Sutherland, action against a superior French force, captivity, and escape across France. The books share a career and a navy but are separate narratives. The set is naval historical fiction, not a single continuous novel.
