George Smiley, newly in charge of the British Circus after a Soviet mole has been expelled, traces a money trail from Moscow to Hong Kong and sends Jerry Westerby, a journalist and occasional agent, into the colony and into Southeast Asia. The inquiry turns on a wealthy Hong Kong magnate, his brother, and a Soviet interest in China, while American intelligence and local police pursue overlapping aims. Safe houses, racecourses, and war-damaged cities form the field. The novel is the middle volume of the Karla sequence, a story of service rivalry and field work, not a standalone thriller of one chase.
