By Jules Verne · 1982

Synopsis

Published in 1873, Verne's novel begins at the Reform Club in London, where the impassive gentleman Phileas Fogg wagers that he can circle the globe in eighty days. He leaves that night with his new French valet Passepartout, racing by steamer, railway, sledge, and elephant through Suez, India, Hong Kong, Japan, and the American transcontinental line, while the detective Fix follows him as a suspected bank robber. A rescue in India and delays of weather and politics threaten the deadline. The book is a timed travel adventure about schedule, chance, and keeping one's word.
