This narrative history follows the persecution and murder of the Jews of Europe from the rise of Nazi rule through ghettoisation, mobile killing units, deportations, and the death camps, to liberation and the remnant that remained. Gilbert builds the account from official documents, diaries, and survivor testimony, moving country by country and year by year so that local round-ups and the wider machinery appear together. Named individuals recur beside statistics. The book is a comprehensive chronicle of the Jewish catastrophe, not a biography of one leader and not a study of the war's military campaigns alone.
