First published in 1622, this history examines the reign of Henry VII from Bosworth to the king's death. Bacon follows the pretenders Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck, the king's marriages and treaties, his use of bonds, fines, and councillors such as Empson and Dudley, and the cautious foreign policy that preferred gold and diplomacy to open war. The portrait is of a new dynasty securing itself after civil conflict. The book is a political character-study of one reign, not a chronicle of the whole Wars of the Roses and not a life of Henry VIII.
