Written about 1700-1701 by a Shropshire yeoman, this parish history of Myddle describes the church, the seats, and then the families who occupied them, pew by pew. Gough records genealogies, farms, trades, lawsuits, bastardy, sudden deaths, and local reputation, mixing what he saw with what older neighbours told him. The scale is a single manor and its hamlets rather than the nation. The book is an antiquarian and gossiping survey of one community at the end of the seventeenth century, not a county history and not a novel of village life.
