Published in 1949, this Heyer Regency follows Arabella Tallant, a country parson's daughter sent to London for a season she can barely afford. A chance remark on the road leads the rich, bored Mr Beaumaris to take her for a fortune-hunter; she, proud and inexperienced, will not correct the story and is swept into fashionable bets, a climbing cousin, and the care of a crossing-sweeper boy. The comedy is of manners and mistaken motives in Mayfair and at the edges of the marriage market. The novel is a courtship story about pride, money, and a girl who refuses to be bought.
