The History of England from the Accession of James II
By Thomas Babington MacAulay · 2009
Back to CatalogueThis unfinished narrative history, published from 1848, treats England from the accession of James II in 1685 to the death of William III in 1702. Macaulay opens with a wide survey of earlier English society, then follows James's Catholic policy, the Monmouth rebellion, the invitation to William of Orange, and the Revolution of 1688. Later volumes cover the settlement under William and Mary, the wars in Ireland and on the Continent, party conflict, and the king's last years. The work is a Whig political history in consecutive prose, not a collection of portraits, and it stops short of Queen Anne's full reign.
