Title Details
The History of England from 1485 to 1685
By Thomas Babington MacAulay · 1985
Back to CatalogueThis volume arranges Thomas Babington Macaulay's mid-nineteenth-century essays and sketches as a connected account of English history from Henry VII to the death of Charles II, the two centuries that his longer History only summarised. Chapters follow the Tudor reigns, James I and Charles I, the Civil War, the Interregnum, and the Restoration, with separate pieces on Shakespeare, Bacon, Milton, and Bunyan. The method is vivid character and party narrative rather than archival monograph. The book is a compiled Whig portrait of the period, not the famous History that begins at the accession of James II.
