Synopsis

First published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, this novel follows Alonso Quixano, a minor La Mancha gentleman who reads so many chivalric romances that he rides out as Don Quixote, knight-errant, with Sancho Panza as squire and the farm girl Dulcinea as his invented lady. Inns become castles, windmills giants, and flocks armies, while priests, innkeepers, and dukes test, mock, or indulge him. The second part answers the fame of the first and a rival sequel. The book is a comic prose epic of delusion and companionship, not a handbook of knighthood.
