Synopsis
This is Trollope's Autobiography, written in the mid-1870s and published in 1883 after his death. He recounts a miserable childhood and schooling, his years as a clerk and then a senior official in the Post Office, the Irish and English posts that taught him the country he used in fiction, and the working habits by which he wrote his novels to a daily count of pages. He comments on individual books, on money earned, and on the Victorian literary market. The book is a professional memoir of how a novelist organised labour, not a romantic artist's confession.
