First published in 1963, this history recounts the removal of tenant communities from the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as landlords replaced runrig townships with sheep walks and, later, deer forests. Prebble follows particular glens and islands, especially Sutherland, through eviction notices, the burning of houses, famine, emigration, and the resistance that sometimes met the factors and police. Chiefs, tacksmen, ministers, and crofters appear as parties to a change in land use. The book is a narrative of dispossession, not a general economic history of Scotland and not a clan genealogy.
