The Herefordshire Pomona
Coloured Figures and Descriptions of the Most Esteemed Kinds of Apples and Pears
By Henry Graves Bull · 2014
Back to CatalogueIssued in parts from 1878 to 1885, this pomological catalogue describes the apples and pears grown in Herefordshire, a county then famous for cider orchards. Henry Graves Bull, working with Robert Hogg and the Woolhope Naturalists' Field Club, records each variety's shape, colour, season, flavour, and use at table or in the press, with notes on names that were already slipping from markets. Colour plates show fruit, blossom, and some blights. The work is a systematic descriptive survey meant to preserve local kinds, not a cookbook and not a picture album without text.
