First published in 1959, this novel brings four people to Hill House, a mansion whose angles and history have a reputation for the uncanny: Dr John Montague, who wants to record phenomena; Eleanor Vance, an isolated young woman; Theodora, an artist; and Luke, the heir. Doors, cold spots, writings on walls, and sounds in the night attach themselves especially to Eleanor, whose need to belong the house seems to answer. The narrative stays close to her perceptions. The book is a psychological ghost story about a building and a guest, not an explanation of the supernatural and not a slasher tale.
