In the theocratic republic of Gilead, built on the former United States after a coup, fertile women are assigned as Handmaids to bear children for barren ruling households. The narrator, stripped of her name and called Offred, lives in the house of a Commander and his wife Serena Joy, under the watch of Aunts, Guardians, and Eyes. She recalls her lost husband and daughter, tests small rebellions, and hears rumours of an underground. The novel is a first-person dystopia of reproductive control and official piety, not a war story and not a documentary of any single real regime.
