Shakespeare's Roman play, printed in the 1623 Folio, follows Mark Antony, one of Rome's triumvirs, in his alliance and passion with Cleopatra, queen of Egypt. In Italy, Octavius Caesar consolidates power and uses Antony's marriage to Octavia as a political bond that Antony cannot keep. The action moves between Alexandria, Rome, and the sea-fight at Actium as personal loyalty and imperial command pull Antony apart. Enobarbus and the soldiers and attendants around the two lovers comment on the decay of a partnership. The play is a tragedy of public office undone by a private bond.
