First published in 1962, this history reconstructs the opening month of the First World War in 1914. Tuchman follows war plans, mobilizations, and the first clashes in Belgium and France, from the German advance and the fall of Liege and Brussels through the Battle of the Frontiers and the Marne. She also treats the war at sea and the clash in the East. Portraits of commanders and monarchs sit beside the movement of armies. The book ends as the war of movement stalls. It is a narrative of the war's first weeks, not a history of the whole conflict.
