The Gunpowder Plot
Narrative of Oswald Tesimond
By Oswald Tesimond · 2005
Back to CatalogueThis seventeenth-century narrative, written in Italian by a Jesuit who had heard of the conspiracy under the seal of confession, recounts the 1605 plan to blow up King James I and Parliament. Tesimond describes Robert Catesby's recruitment of Catholic gentlemen, the hiring of a cellar under the House of Lords, Guy Fawkes's watch over the powder, the warning letter to Lord Monteagle, and the arrests that followed. He then follows the flight of the plotters into the Midlands and the government's use of the affair against the Jesuit mission in England. The book is a contemporary Catholic account of the plot, not a later popular history and not a life of Fawkes.
