First published in 1975, this fourth novel of The Dark Is Rising sequence sends Will Stanton to recover from illness in the Welsh hills near Cader Idris. There he meets Bran Davies, an albino boy raised as a shepherd's son, and is drawn into a hunt for a golden harp needed to wake sleepers who can still oppose the Dark. The Brenin Llwyd, the Grey King of local weather and mountain, sets silver-eyed dogs and human agents against them. Farm, chapel, and high pasture are the field of the struggle. The book is a children's fantasy of Arthurian remnant and Welsh landscape, not a standalone school story.
