First published in 1900, this volume in Andrew Lang's coloured fairy-book series collects wonder tales from French, Italian, Greek, Lithuanian, African, and other traditions, retold in a uniform English. Typical pieces include Donkey Skin, The Goblin Pony, Fortunatus and his Purse, The Goat-faced Girl, Prunella, and stories of thieves, ogres, and magical helpers. Youngest sons, animal spouses, and bargains that must be kept or broken supply the usual plots. There is no connecting frame. The book is a miscellaneous anthology of traditional narrative, not an original cycle and not a folklore monograph.
