First published in 1892, this is the third volume in Andrew Lang's coloured fairy-book series, gathering wonder tales from French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and other sources, retold in English for family reading. Typical pieces include The Blue Bird, The Half-Chick, The Story of Caliph Stork, The Three Little Pigs, Heart of Ice, and Grimm stories such as Jorinde and Joringel and the Fisherman and his Wife. Youngest children, talking animals, enchanted objects, and tests set by witches or kings recur. There is no frame story and no single hero. The book is a mixed anthology of traditional narrative, not an original novel.
