First published in 1955, this work retells the body of ancient Greek myth from the creation and the rule of the Titans through the Olympian gods, the Theban and Argonaut cycles, the Trojan War, and the returns of the heroes. Each tale is given as a continuous narrative, then followed by notes in which Graves compares variants and argues for ritual and historical origins, often in a reconstructed matriarchal religion. Gods, demigods, and mortal houses are treated as a single genealogical system. The book is a retelling with speculative commentary, not a verse translation of Homer or Hesiod.
