Published in 1908, this novel brings the orphan Anne Shirley, a talkative red-haired eleven-year-old, to Green Gables, the Prince Edward Island farm of aging siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had asked for a boy to help with the work. Anne's imagination, her scrapes at school, her rivalry and later friendship with Gilbert Blythe, and her hunger to belong structure the years that follow. The setting is Avonlea: lanes, the Lake of Shining Waters, and a Presbyterian small town. The book is a growing-up story about a child who remakes a household by being wanted there.
