Kept from 1800 to 1803 at Dove Cottage in Grasmere, this is Dorothy Wordsworth's daily record of walks, weather, neighbours, and the household she shared with her brother William. She notes beggars on the road, work in the garden and kitchen, illnesses, and visits from Coleridge, and she sets down scenes - lakeshore daffodils, a leech-gatherer, moon on the hills - that later enter the poems being written in the same rooms. The entries are dated and local. The book is a working journal of a Lakes household, not a formal autobiography and not a guidebook to the district.
